Sri Lanka National Cricket Team white ball captain Dasun Shanaka has opened up about not being sold in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) mini-auction and also reacted to Gautam Gambhir’s statement that ” I probably wouldn’t have had the money to buy it.”

All-rounders were in high demand at the IPL mini-auction, with the likes of Sam Curran, Cameron Green and Ben Stokes landing lucrative deals. However, Shanaka was not sold as no franchise showed interest in him.
The Sri Lankan captain performed exceptionally well in the January 2023 T20I series against India and showed his power-hitting brilliance. After brilliant performances by him in the series, the former India opening batsman gautam Gambhir, who is currently the mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League (IPL), had said that the all-rounder would have triggered an intense bidding war between the franchises had the auction been held after the series.

“I won’t have any money, it would be that expensive, the way he’s hit. That’s what the auction is about,” Gambhir had said on Star Sports.
“Imagine if this series had happened right before the auction, some of the franchises probably wouldn’t have had the money to buy it.”

In an interaction with Hindustan Times, Shanaka spoke about not being sold in the mini-auction and reacted to Gautam Gambhir’s statement.
He said he likes to hit on Indian batting-friendly courts. Shanaka also said that he was not disappointed after failing to sell out in the IPL mini-auction and that he was hopeful to be a part of the tournament in the future.
“When it comes to India, the pitches are batting friendly. So I really enjoy those conditions. It’s (aggressive hitting) in my game, my knee-jerk reactions come to play there. I don’t care that they didn’t pick me in the IPL. I am sure there will be something for me in India in the future. So I am looking forward to the chance to play in the IPL,” Shanaka said.
